 Ed Kashi, In the small mountain village of Hamdila, in the Barzan area, women work at the Naseem corn chip making factory. This area was devastated between the 1960s and 1980s by Iraqi forces and the rebuilding since 1991 has been significant. This small factory is an example of this rebirth, with significance to this factory because it employs mainly women who lost most of their male family members during the Anfal. This village was destroyed 3 times during the Anfal and most of the men were killed or disappeared. The survivors fled to Iraq and only started to return after 1991. The product is distributed throughout Iraq and employs nearly 100 women from the surrounding villages. There are 3 shifts of workers. Individual stories: Woman with reddish gold tint in her hair is Hijrat Badi Muhammad, born in 1980. She lost 6 brothers adn her father to the Baath regime in 1983. She has only one brother and a sister and mother left. Woman working at machine with black headscarve is Radia Ramazan Abdullah and she was born in 1981. Her father, two uncles and grandfather were arrested in 1983 and never seen again. She lives alone with her mother and sister. Woman with gold on wrist is Firdaws Sileman Abdullah and she was born in 1982. She lost her grandfather, father, 3 uncles and lives alone with her mother. Woman in purple top was born in 1982 and her father, grandfather, and seven uncles disappeared in 1983 and lives with her two brothers and two sisters and mother. |
